Liinats´uraq are Paul Hagu, Andreas Kalkun, Pärtel Lippus, Urmas Kalla, Lauri Sommer, Paul Vahelaan, Kaspar Kolk, Peeter Panov, Valdo Valper, Arvi Haak, Heno Sarv and Jüri Metssalu. Liinats´uraq is a traditional Seto male chorus in Tartu. Earlier they met rather spontaneously for singing together, but from the fall of 2000 the meetings and also appearances in public became more regular. The singers in the chorus are mostly men with Seto roots living in Tartu and enjoying the songs sung in Seto villages at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
Seto men’s singing with its specific tense voice quality and prolonged richly ornamented tunes is somewhat different from the songs of Seto women. Singing in Seto is antiphonal. Both male and female groups have a leading singer and the chorus responding to the leader. In the chorus voices are divided into one high and sharp part called killõ and the heterophonic lower group called torrõ. The songs of Liinats´uraq come mostly from the traditional Seto areas around the villages of Uusvada and Meremäe, only some pieces originate from other parts of Setomaa. Also, their repertoire includes some earlier men’s songs that have survived in the performance of women as well as some Seto interpretations of new Estonian folk songs.
